Overview and history of Biratori Town

Biratori is derived from pira utur, which means “between cliffs” in the Ainu language.
The town is located at the western edge of the Hidaka district and has an area of 743.09km2. Spanning 41.1km north to south and 52.8km east to west, its triangular shape is reminiscent of that of Hokkaido.
Well known for its plentiful nature and as a center of Ainu culture, the town continues to build a prosperous and vibrant community based on its principal industry of agriculture.
